In “Diet Wars,” FRONTLINE examines the great diet debate. Viewers follow FRONTLINE correspondent Steve Talbot, whose discovery that those “few extra pounds” have put him perilously close to the clinical definition of obesity prompts him to evaluate the myriad diets now available to overweight Americans.
“America has become the fattest nation on earth,” Talbot says. “About two-thirds of the American population is overweight, and of those, half are already obese. The diet industry is the visible sign of a looming public health problem.”
How did America get so fat in recent years? “Diet Wars” explores the social, cultural, and dietary factors that have led to the fattening of America, while also examining how the medical and diet industries have responded to consumers’ desire to lose weight. The documentary examines how concerns in the early 1960s that Americans were eating too much animal fat and cholesterol prompted doctors to begin recommending that patients reduce the amount of fat in their diets. The problem, some observers say, is that the low-fat recommendations failed to distinguish between the so-called “good fats” — unsaturated vegetable and fish oils — and the “bad fats” — saturated animal fats — associated with clogged arteries, heart disease, and other health problems.
“Somehow, we got this notion that, ‘Aha! If we take the fat out of foods we will be able to reduce the total caloric intake and people will be able to control their weight,’” says Tufts University Nutrition Professor Dr. Jeanne Goldberg. “And so industry got very busy making low-fat, reduced-fat, fat-free products .”
Soon, low-fat and fat-free products flooded the marketplace, as did high-profile low-fat diets like Pritikin and Ornish. In “Diet Wars,” Talbot’s search for the perfect diet takes him from a Weight Watchers pep rally — where spokeswoman Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson revs up the audience of faithful followers — to several low-fat diet centers, where proponents extol the virtues of their respective plans.
“The Pritikin Diet is basically a healthy diet. Pritikin didn’t start as a weight loss program — it started as a way to reverse heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes,” says Dr. James Kenney, chief nutritionist of the Pritikin Longevity Center. “What makes eating healthy in America difficult is that most restaurant foods — particularly fast restaurant food — is designed to make people fat and sick.”
So popular did the low-fat craze become that in 1992 the U.S. Department of Agriculture introduced its much-vaunted food pyramid guidelines that recommended Americans lay off the fat and load up on grains and cereals, which are carbohydrates.
But there was a problem. During the 1990s, despite the new guidelines and the glut of low-fat and fat-free products available, Americans got even fatter. While most experts agree that Americans’ increasingly sedentary lifestyle and fondness for fast food contributed to the nation’s growing girth, others postulate that the low-fat label misled consumers into believing that such products contained fewer calories, causing them to eat even more.
“The low-fat message was interpreted as if you had a product that was lower in fat it was good for you without thinking of calories,” says Professor Marion Nestle of New York University’s Department of Nutrition, Food Studies & Public Health. “The best example is the Snackwell phenomenon: Snackwell cookies were advertised as low-fat cookies but they had almost the same number of calories.”
Nutritionists also note that in order to make products low-fat, companies had to replace the fat with something else — usually carbohydrates.

People put on weight when they take in more calories than they burn. If you think of food as fuel, the energy content of the fuel is measured in calories. A slice of bread, for example, has about 100 food calories. If you were to add up all the calories you consumed in a day — breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks — that’s your energy input. Your body uses this energy for everything from breathing to moving around. Everyone is different, but over the course of a day, an “average” man expends something like 1800 calories and an “average” woman around 1500 calories.
Jon Palfreman is the producer of “Diet Wars.”
It turns out that even a slight energy imbalance will, over time, have consequences. Eating only 50 calories a day more than you burn will over time translate into about one pound a year, or 30 pounds over three decades.
- Is it fair to blame low fat-dietary advice (such as that contained in the USDA food pyramid) for the obesity crisis?
No. While the percentage of fat in the American diet dropped from 40 percent in 1990 to around 34 percent today, the absolute amount of fat actually increased. The true explanation for the obesity epidemic is much simpler: Americans are eating more total calories. In the 1990s, the bulk of those additional calories came from carbs — mostly refined starches and sugary drinks.
- How do diets work?
All diets work by restricting calories. Since simply telling people to eat smaller portions doesn’t sell books, most commercial diet plans are built around a nutritional trick that makes it easier to restrict dietary intake. Food is made up of four basic components (so-called macronutrients): water, fats, protein and carbohydrates. Therefore, it follows that telling people to avoid fats or cut out carbs will automatically eliminate a lot of food choices. Low-carb diets, for example, are effective, because they remove an enormous number of potential foods such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc., from a person’s diet.

Enter Dr. Atkins and the low-carb diet craze currently sweeping the nation. Whereas low-fat diets like Pritikin and Ornish warned followers against eating high-fat foods like steak and eggs, Atkins followers avoided the carbohydrates that are the mainstay of a low-fat lifestyle.
Not surprisingly, low-carb diets have come under attack by everyone from low-fat diet proponents to scientists and the media. In “Diet Wars,” Talbot speaks with science journalist Gary Taubes, who wrote a controversial article for The New York Times Magazine that questioned whether the food pyramid was wrong and limiting carbohydrates was the way to go.
“I got crucified in a variety of publications,” Taubes tells FRONTLINE. “A Washington Post reporter went after me, the Center for Science in the Public Interest went after me because suddenly I turned around and said, ‘Maybe low-fat diets don’t work and maybe low-carbohydrate diets are the answer.’”
Taubes admits to being surprised by the ferocity with which his article was attacked. “People are more polarized on this than they are in politics,” he says. “I’m stunned.”
What most nutritionists and industry experts do agree on is the fact that America is facing an obesity problem of epidemic proportions.
“This is the public health issue of our generation,” says Dr. James Hill, director of the University of Colorado’s Center for Human Nutrition. “[When] you see 65 percent of Americans are overweight or obese, what amazes me is that anyone maintains a healthy weight in this environment.”

Do Others Find You Sexy? Do you like Victorias Secret? Katy Perry? Diets? Weight Loss? Looking Good?
Do others find you sexy? In contemporary western culture we often understand our self as a body which is an object of desire in others eyes. We contort our self to look more sexy for others. We regulate our body & behaviour to pleasure others desires about what we should be to pleasure them.
We live in a culture with a superficial understanding of the human self. We are acculturated by mass media and acquaintances to equate our self with our body as viewed through the eyes of others with social power. This is an understanding of the human self as the external facade of a body’s behaviour observable by others. I will call this ‘body-behaviour’. We are acculturated to understand ourself as an object which only has value if it can be used by others to gratify their desires. For example, some young women believe their self only has value as an object which can be used by men to gratify sexual desires. With this understanding the means to social status is making our bodies more desirable to others, and offering our body-behaviour as an object for others’ exploitation. Attachment to understanding our self as body-behaviour which only has value when desirable to others leads to suffering. For example, women’s attachment to understanding their self as a body-behaviour used by men for sexual gratification, and craving for social status through being recognised as a sexy body-behaviour can lead to anoerexia (ie Dukkha/suffering arises).

P90X Changed My Life – FINAL Day 90 Results
Here they are.. My Round 1 results from P90X. I am very happy with the results! It’s amazing how “some people’s” only possible explanation for amazing results like these is steroids! Sorry to say, “some people”, but its 100% hard work and commitment! THAT’S IT!!!
Pullups:
Day 1 – (2)
Day 90 – (22)
Pushups:
Day 1 – (21)
Day 90 – (62)
Body Compostition:
Day 1 – 197 pds; 16% BF
Day 90 – 196 pds; 8% BF
Dumbells: I used the adjustable powerblocks and used as much weight as possible while still doing 8 reps. By the end I was using the max weight (55 pds) and getting 10-12 reps.
My Nutrition Plan:
First 60 days – (Approx. 4000 calories)
I used to do a little bodybuilding 5 years ago in college (not like you can tell from my initial pics.. lol) But, I didn’t follow the P90x meal plan.. I used the first 60 days as a bulking phase before I started carb cycling for the final 30 days. I actually am pretty boring with my diet because I eat pretty much the same thing every single day.. lol
Pre-Meal 1: I take my BSN Nitrix and sometimes throw in a little cardio.
Meal 1: I eat an egg sandwich with 8 egg whites, piece of american cheese and about 3 ounces of sliced turkey breast between two slices of wheat toast. Also, I make the smoothie in the p90x nutrition book using BSN’s Syntha Protein. Also with breakfast I take an Animal Pak for my vitamins.
Meal 2: I’ll drink a meal replacement shake (Lean Body) and take my BSN Cellmass
Pre-Meal 3: I’ll take my BSN Nitrix again 30 min before I eat.
Meal 3: I’ll load up a huge Chef Salad with as much possible veggies, chicken breast, and beans I can…and I supplement spinach for the lettuce. Ranch dressing…
Meal 4: I’ll have another meal replacement shake… Lean Body
Pre-workout: I’ll drink my BSN N.O. Explode pre-workout drink.
Post Workout (Meal 5): I’ll load up a big ole peanut butter and jelly between 2 pieces of whole weat bread. Also, I’ll take my BSN Cellmass again and sometimes drink a little 100% Whey Protein.
Meal 6: I’ll eat a slab of some sort of meat (filet, fish, or chkn breast), wild rice, and a green veggie
And before I go to bed I’ll have another big protein shake using BSN Syntha Protein so I stay in an anabolic state while I sleep..
Last 30 days – (Approx. 2000 calories)
I quit taking Cellmass and cut calories by about half. I lost a few pounds of water weight from cutting out the creatine but it also ripped me up a little more too.. I focused on cycling my carbs too during the last 30 days.
Shoot me a personal message if you have any more questions! BRING IT!
